Flemish, circa 1600, old master oil on canvas of large-scale by a follower of Frans Floris the Elder (1517-1570) depicting the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah with soldiers, courtiers, royalty, and other figures in landscape and architectural setting housed in a period, possibly original, foliate carved giltwood frame. The style of this painting strongly borrows from Floris’ aesthetic, particularly in the treatment of the figures and their composition, but also incorporates elements of the emerging Netherlandish Mannerism of the late 16th century as popularized by Karel van Mander (1548-1606). Canvas: 57.38″ by 41.25″. A truly impressive work. Provenance available upon request.
