An exceptional museum-calibre Swedish circa 1800 late Gustavian period armchair of neoclassical form by Swedish royal cabinetmaker Ephraim Ståhl (1768 -1820), the giltwood frame in original finish having ‘barrel-back’ with ebonized double bellflower borders continuing down sloping arms with griffin-head returns at sides with original verdigris wash over ebonizing to simulate patinated bronze, the sides with centre palmettes and bellflower motifs and seat-rail with roundel-centred bellflower chain between rosettes on sabre front and rear legs. Remains of Ståhl’s signature paper label survives on interior back seat-rail. A truly rare and exquisite example of Gustavian furniture.
Provenance: Private Park Avenue Manhattan collection originally acquired in the 1950’s.

Condition: Good. Incredibly rare original finish in excellent condition given age and use; scattered minor 'flea-bites' revealing gesso; historical repair to one griffin head; presents beautifully. Vintage upholstery faded and stained.
