An exceptional Academic charcoal on paper drawing by noted French artist Lucien Laurent-Gsell of a muscular nude male with back-turned, signed ‘Laurent-Gsell’ lower right, presented French-matted in a neoclassical water-gilt wood frame. Measurements below are overall, work measures 24.25″ by 15″.
BIOGRAPHY: Lucien Laurent-Gsell, (Paris, 1860 – 1944), French painter and illustrator. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts where he studied under Caspar Gsell (his father) and Alexandre Cabanel. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1881, the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1889, and the Société? Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1909. As the nephew of Louis Pasteur, he painted various scenes at the Pasteur Institute as well as attending the ateliers of Max Jacob, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Henri Rousseau, among others. He was appointed Navy painter in 1911. His works are in the permanenet collections of the Musée d’Orsay and The Louvre, Department of Graphic Arts (Musée du Louvre, Département des Arts graphiques).
