An exceptional and exceptionally rare, pristine, circa 1600 Chinese Ming Dynasty, Wanli reign, export for the Japanese market ‘Swatow’ or ‘Zhangzhou’ shallow bowl of Jingdezhen manufacture, the round form having unusual scene of a robed monkey as a Buddhist monk with left arm raising alms bowl and right resting against a rock in forest landscape with flying duck in vibrant overglaze turquoise enamelling outlined in black, the reverse with turquoise enamelled ‘clouds’, the footring with characteristic ‘rough’ glaze and substantial kiln-grit. A museum calibre example.
